The Coordination Committee of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) nominated Mr. Francis Gurry, a national of Australia, to become the next Director General of WIPO. The candidate will have to be appointed by the WIPO General Assembly at its next meeting, which is scheduled from September 22 to 30, 2008.
El Comité de Coordinación de la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI) eligió al Sr. Francis Gurry, de Australia, como candidato para el puesto de Director General de la OMPI. El candidato deberá ser designado para ese puesto por la Asamblea General de la OMPI en la reunión que celebrará del 22 al 30 de septiembre próximo.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reinforced its cooperation with the Republic of Ghana with the signing on May 7, 2008 of an intellectual property (IP) development plan which aims to build the country's capacity to create, protect and utilize IP as a power tool for economic growth and development. The IP Development Plan also seeks to ensure that the IP offices and potential users of the IP system - such as universities, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), chambers of commerce and industry, research and development institutions and copyright organizations - have the technical capacity to use the intellectual property system. The agreement was signed, on behalf of the Republic of Ghana, by H.E. Joe Ghartey, Attorney General and Minister for Justice.
La Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI) consolidó su cooperación con Ghana gracias a la firma, el 7 de mayo de 2008, de un plan de desarrollo de la propiedad intelectual (P.I.) destinado a fortalecer las capacidades de ese país en lo que atañe a crear, proteger y utilizar la P.I. como instrumento de crecimiento y desarrollo económicos. Mediante este plan de desarrollo de la P.I. también se vela por que las oficinas de P.I. y los usuarios potenciales del sistema de P.I. universidades, pequeñas y medianas empresas (Pymes), cámaras de industria y comercio, instituciones de investigación y desarrollo y organizaciones de derecho de autor cuenten con la capacidad técnica necesaria para utilizar el sistema de P.I. En nombre de Ghana, firmó el acuerdo S.E. el Sr. Joe Ghartey, Fiscal General y Ministro de Justicia.

Sao Tome and Principe became the 139th contracting state of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) when it deposited its instrument of accession at WIPO on April 3, 2008. The Treaty will enter into force for Sao Tome and Principe on July 3, 2008.
El 3 de abril de 2008, y tras depositar en la OMPI su instrumento de adhesión, Santo Tomé y Príncipe pasó a ser el 139 Estado contratante del Tratado de Cooperación en materia de Patentes (PCT), que entrará en vigor para ese país el 3 de julio de 2008.
