WIPO Virtual Workshop on The Determinants of COVID-19 Vaccine Development Success - May 5, 2022 from 14h00 to 17h00 CET

April 21, 2022

This virtual workshop, organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on May 5, 2022, will present the Study The Determinants of COVID-19 Vaccine Development Success, by Ms. Rena M. Conti, Associate Professor in the Department of Markets, Public Policy and Law and Co-director of the Technology Policy and Research Institute at the Boston University Questrom School of Business.  Ms. Conti looked at a number of select case studies and found that vaccine success or failure result from a variety of determinants that work together.  The study highlights particularly the importance of research and manufacturing collaboration, political will, funding, among many other factors.  The study was designed to provide academic insights in order to stimulate thinking and incentivize further discussion.

The peer reviewers, Ms. Shanelle Hall, former Assistant Secretary General at UNICEF/UN and founder of “The Yellow House” consultancy firm, and Mr. Axel Metzger, Professor of Civil Law and Intellectual Property at Humboldt-University in Berlin, will comment the study.  The workshop will then move to a panel discussion with further contributions from Mr. Carsten Fink, Chief Economist at WIPO, Mr. Martin Friede, Unit Head, Product and Delivery Research, Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals Department at the World Health Organization (WHO) and Ms. Deborah King, Vaccine Research Lead, Vaccines Priority Area at the Wellcome Trust. The workshop will serve as a forum for exchange of views and will conclude with an open discussion session among all panelists and an opportunity for questions from the audience.

The workshop is open to the interested public. Participation requires prior registration by May 4, 2022. The workshop will be held in virtual format and in English only. No interpretation will be available.
