What is the Madrid System?

The Madrid System is a convenient and cost-effective solution for registering and managing trademarks worldwide. File a single international trademark application and pay one set of fees to apply for protection in the 132 countries covered. Modify, renew, or expand your global trademark portfolio through one centralized system.

You can use the Madrid System if you are a national of – or have a domicile or business in – any of the 132 countries covered by the Madrid System's 116 members.
You must also already have – or have applied for – a national or regional trademark registration in the IP Office of a Madrid System member.

Fees include:

  • a basic fee (653 Swiss francs; or 903 Swiss francs for a mark in color) (Note! A 90% reduction applies if you are filing an application in the IP Office of a least-developed country); and
  • additional fees depending on where you want to protect your mark, and how many classes of goods and services you want to cover.

To expand the geographical coverage of, or modify or renew your international registration you will have to pay additional fees.

The Madrid System cuts through the complexity of securing global trademark protection in multiple markets. You don’t need to navigate different filing procedures, languages and currencies in each country. Instead, you get a single international trademark registration that covers all the markets where protection is granted. (The intellectual property (IP) office of each member where you seek protection will decide whether it can grant protection under its own domestic laws.)

  • One registration to manage; one renewal date
  • Less paperwork and lower costs
  • Complete flexibility to add new countries whenever your business is ready to expand.
