Managing International Trademark Registrations – Expand Protection

You can ask to expand protection of an international trademark registration (“asset“) to additional Madrid System members at any time directly through your eMadrid workbench: 
  1. Login to eMadrid with your WIPO Account
  2. Go to “Manage your trademarks” to access your workbench
  3. Click on the three dots (“…”) to the right of the relevant asset – or open the asset directly in your workbench and click on “Manage trademark”
  4. Choose “Expand protection of your registration”
  5. Select the Madrid System members where you seek protection and indicate whether you want to expand protection for all goods and services (total) or some goods and services for all members/some goods and services for some members (partial)
  6. Follow the prompts to complete your request.
Tip! If you did not already include one in your original international trademark application – or in a previously recorded request to expand protection – you can add a voluntary description of your mark.

How much does it cost?

Fees include:

  • Basic fee: 300 Swiss francs (CHF) 
  • Complementary fee: 100 CHF; or individual fee (varies) for each additional Madrid System member where you seek protection.

What happens next?

We will check your request to make sure it complies with all formal requirements.

  • If yes, we will record it in the International Register, publish it in the WIPO Gazette of International Marks, and notify you and the Madrid System members where you seek protection. Sample Notification of the Recording of a Subsequent Designation [PDF]
     
  • If no, we will send you an “irregularity notice” identifying the problem, explaining how you can fix it within a given time limit (usually three months), and indicating what will happen if you don’t. Sample Irregularity Notice [PDF]
We will notify you of any decisions from the Madrid System members where you seek protection – for example, a notification of a statement of grant of protection [PDF] or provisional refusal [PDF]. 

Important: Depending on the date of your international trademark registration, you may not be able to expand its geographical scope of protection in certain countries: 

  • Brazil: recorded before October 2, 2019
  • Estonia: recorded before November 18, 1998
  • India: recorded before July 8, 2013
  • Philippines: recorded before July 25, 2012
