Name: Mark Nottingham WIPO's actions concerning Internet domain name registration are creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear among those who have registered domain names. WIPO *must* recognize that the Internet transcends commerce, and is used for purposes other than commercial gain. Your prioritization of intellectual property, and therefore commerce, above all other uses and users does a serious disservice to the everyone concerned. The current state of affairs is most troublesome, because a business can claim a name that is somewhat like one which they wish to use. This is despite the fact that several businesses in different industries or different jurisdictions may have equally valid claims, to say nothing of non-commercial entities. I strongly urge WIPO to reconsider its actions and proposed plans, in order to more fully incorporate the entire community, and to avoid situations where a name is taken from someone because a company wishes to do business under it. |
