Name: Brian J. Fox Why can't WIPO work with ICAAN to establish top level domain names with stringent application requirements to avoid legal battles over existing URLs? The example of crew.com being transferred to J. Crew seems overly zelous. Was compensation provided? Again, why not establish high-level domain names that require stringent criteria for obtaining a URL? Create a .rtm for 'registered trade mark' and establish that anyone that wishes to use the domain name actually own the trade mark on a phrase? WIPO and ICAAN have the abilty to solve this problem by creating new standards, _not_ by reassigning URL's thru the courts. By establishing new standards, WIPO and ICAAN have the ability to enhance the reputation of the Internet by creating strong standards that can be communicated to people and enforced. If everyone knows that only registered trade mark owners can obtain a URL ending in .rtm, aren't we all better off? Thank you. |
