WIPO Japan Office held a memorial event virtually to celebrate World IP Day focusing on SMEs and start-ups

June 4, 2021

On April 26, 2021, WIPO Japan Office held an online event to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day.

April 26 has been designated as “World IP Day” in honor of the day on which the treaty to establish the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) came into force. Each year, various commemorative events are organized around the globe on the day to increase understanding of the role that intellectual property plays in everyday life and to commemorate the contributions of inventors and artists to the development of society.

As creating new ideas and markets that accelerate innovation are increasingly needed under the new normal era, WIPO Japan Office held an online event (free of charge) on April 26 to commemorate World IP Day under the theme of 2021 “IP and SMEs: Taking your ideas to market”, featuring keynote speeches, panel discussions and other programs by valuable guests from different fields.

A wide range of speakers from business leaders and founders of Japan’s leading companies to middle and high school students participated in the online event and discussed the role that intellectual property system plays as well as challenges of starting new business. More than 1,200 registered to participate the event and the number of viewers of the video continued to rise after the event and topped 3,500 although the video was open only to registrants.

For more details, please visit our special website where you can watch the archived video. The report in Japanese on the memorial online event is available here (Article published on A.I.P.P.I, No.5, Vol.66). In addition, external media have reported on the event.
