'This Ordinance specifies the types of appellation which may be registered, the protection afforded to them, registration procedures and control requirements: definitions of registered appellation of origin and protected geographical indication, generic names, registration procedure (persons entitled to file applications for registration, content of the application, specifications, decision, opposition, registration and publication, etc.), control, etc.
Most recent amendments in respect of GIs:
Articles 1 to 4, 4b, 5 to 7, 8a, 12, 16, 16a, 17, 17a and 19 to 23: adopted on November 14, 2007 and entered into effect on January 1, 2008 (RO 2007 6109).
There are two reasons for these amendments:
- Since the entry into effect of the Ordinance, a number of difficulties and shortcomings concerning its implementation have become apparent when registration applications are processed or changes made to specifications;
- the express inclusion in the Ordinance of a registration procedure for foreign appellations of origin.'
