The Australian Best Practice Guide to Collecting Cultural Material was prepared by the Ministry for the Arts of the Attorney-General's Department in 2014.

The guidelines provide a framework of the ethical principles and legal obligations which apply to assist public collecting institutions in the process of acquiring cultural material.

The guidelines relate to the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 and the implementation of UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property 1970.
