Review of the Lisbon System
In September 2008, the Assembly of the Lisbon Union established a Working Group on the Development of the Lisbon System responsible for exploring possible improvements to the procedures under the Lisbon System to make it more attractive for users and prospective new members, while preserving the principles and objectives of the Lisbon Agreement. Since 2009, the Working Group has engaged in a full review of the Lisbon International Registration System involving its possible extension to geographical indications in addition to appellations of origin. A chronological overview of the work carried out so far is provided below.

- Entry into force of amendments to the Regulations under the Lisbon Agreement
in consultation with Member States (January 1, 2012) - Fourth Session of the Working Group (December 12 to 16, 2011)
- The Assembly adopts amendments to Rule 5(3) and Rule 16(1) of the Regulations under the Lisbon Agreement and takes note of the considerable progress made, and the planned work ahead, in the review of the Lisbon system (September 2011)
- Third Session of the Working Group (May 23 to 27, 2011)
- Second Session of the Working Group (August 30 to September 3, 2010)
- WIPO publishes the Results of the Survey and a Study on the Relationship between Regional Systems and Lisbon (June and August 2010)
- Entry into force of amendments to the Regulations under the Lisbon Agreement
and of Administrative Instructions
established by the Director General of WIPO in consultation with Member States (January 1, 2010) - WIPO initiates a survey among various Governments and other stakeholders (September 2009)
- The Assembly adopts amendments to the Regulations under the Lisbon Agreement
and mandates the Working Group to look for further improvements to the Lisbon system with the aim of attracting a larger membership (September 2009) - First Session of the Working Group (March 2009)
