Madrid System: Changes to Regulations (Appointing Representatives and Renewing International Registrations)
November 1, 2022
A number of changes to the Regulations under the Madrid Protocol will come into effect on November 1, 2022.
What’s new?
Appointing representatives
As of November 1, 2022, it will no longer be possible to appoint a representative through a signed letter. All requests should now be made using our online service “Manage your Representative” available under eMadrid.
Important! Though it is still also possible to appoint representatives using downloadable Madrid System forms, we strongly recommend that you use our eMadrid online services.
Note: Applicants can still appoint a representative at the time of filing an international application (eMadrid or Form MM2); new holders (transferees) can use “Change in Ownership” under eMadrid (or Form MM5).
Renewals
To give you more flexibility, it is now possible to renew international registrations as early as six months before the expiry date. And, we will record your renewal, issue your renewal certificate and notify all designated Madrid System members as soon as you have paid all the necessary fees. Note: The renewal date will still match the expiry date.
Important! To ensure that your renewal certificate contains all up-to-date information, you must make any changes to your international registration BEFORE you renew it through eMadrid.
