WIPO Director General Meets with President of Bulgaria

The strategic importance of intellectual property as a tool for economic, social and cultural development was the focus of discussions between Bulgarian President, Mr. Georgi Parvanov, and WIPO Director General, Dr. Kamil Idris, during an official visit to Sofia on October 13, 2003. In the course of their discussions, President Parvanov expressed his appreciation of WIPO's work in promoting the protection of intellectual property (IP) in Bulgaria and said that he looked forward to his country's continued fruitful cooperation with WIPO. Dr. Idris, applauded the Bulgarian authorities for their progress in bolstering the Bulgarian IP system and pledged WIPO's continued support in promoting full use of the IP system in Bulgaria to enable nationals to leverage their innovative and creative assets to foster wealth creation and social well-being. The Director General and the President were also awarded the highest honorary symbol from the University of National and World Economy in Sofia.
President Parvanov and Dr. Idris inaugurated a new center on intellectual property in the University. Dr. Idris said that this was an historic occasion which reflected Bulgaria's commitment to the use of intellectual property to promote the country's wider economic development goals. He also expressed his commitment to further assisting Bulgaria in this respect. The new center will have close links with WIPO's Worldwide Academy, which is the focal point for human resources development at WIPO.
Following the inauguration ceremony, both Dr. Idris and President Parvanov were awarded a medal, symbolizing an honor of the first degree, by the National University of National and World Economy in recognition of their efforts in promoting economic development and social well-being in Bulgaria.
During his visit to Sofia, Dr. Idris also met with a range of high-level policy-makers and academics including Mr. Igor Damyanov, Minister of Education and Science.
Bulgaria became a member of WIPO in 1970 and is party to a large number of WIPO-administered treaties in the field of intellectual property, including the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, the Patent Cooperation Treaty, the Madrid System and the WIPO "Internet" treaties.
