President of the Supreme Court of Thailand Visits WIPO

Geneva, July 3, 2002
Press Releases PR/2002/319

The President of the Supreme Court of Thailand, the Honorable Justice Santi Thakral, led a delegation of justices of the Supreme Court to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for talks on July 3, 2002 with senior officials of the Organization.

WIPO Deputy Director General for Cooperation for Development, Mr. Roberto Castelo, welcomed the delegation to WIPO on behalf of the Director General, Dr. Kamil Idris, and briefed them on cooperation activities with developing countries, especially with Thailand. WIPO has supported Thailand's efforts to enhance the capacity of the national judiciary to address intellectual property cases and to modernize intellectual property legislation in that country. He welcomed the initiative taken by Thailand to establish a separate judicial system for enforcement of intellectual property rights, and said that this was often cited as a model for other developing countries. Mr. Castelo assured the President of WIPO's continued support to the judiciary in Thailand.

The judges were also briefed by other senior officials on various areas of WIPO's work. The judges expressed keen interest in the activities of WIPO and appreciation for the wide range of programs organized in Thailand. Mr. Thakral said that the Supreme Court was committed to further strengthening the capacity of the judiciary to manage intellectual property cases. Rapid developments in the field of intellectual property made it necessary to constantly upgrade the expertise of judicial officials. WIPO's assistance in this area was greatly appreciated.

The Supreme Court of Thailand is the highest judicial body of the country. It comprises a number of specialized divisions, including a separate Intellectual Property and International Trade Division. The Supreme Court is the final court of appeal on all intellectual property cases that are initially heard by the Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court of Thailand.
