Jordanian Judges Visit WIPO

A group of judges from Jordan visited the World Intellectual Property Organization from October 8 to 12, 2001 for briefings on WIPO's work with a view to enhancing enforcement of intellectual property rights in Jordan.
The delegation's visit was considered particularly timely in light of the growing importance of intellectual property as a tool for wealth creation and economic and cultural development. In today's information and knowledge-driven societies, the intellectual property system has a key role to play in converting knowledge and information into tangible economic assets. This has highlighted the need to address questions relating to enforcement and protection of intellectual property rights.
In meetings with WIPO officials, the delegation was assured of the Organization's continuing support and help in enhancing the capacity of Jordanian courts to address intellectual property cases. Questions relating to specialized training programs, fellowships and provision of reference material were considered.
The delegation of judges was briefed on WIPO's overall mandate and functions, technical cooperation activities with developing countries, particularly in the Arab region s, and work in the areas of legislative reform, arbitration and mediation, and the Internet domain name process. They also heard presentations and exchanged views a range of issues relating to intellectual property rights and their enforcement.
The Jordanian judges showed keen interest in WIPO's activities to strengthen and modernize intellectual property systems in developing countries, especially in the revision of legislation, and activities undertaken by the Arab Bureau and the WIPO World Wide Academy in the development of human resources.
The delegation was composed of judges from the Courts of First Instance and Magistrate Courts of Amman and included Judge Ghaleb Al-Rababa'a, Judge Khader Misha'al, Judge Suheir Al-Toubassi, Judge Inas Al-Khalidi, Judge Majed Al-Rafay'eh, Judge Hisham Al-Majali, Judge Nihad Al-Hisban.
