WIPO Director General Offers Condolences to the United Republic of Tanzania

Geneva, October 15, 1999
Press Releases PR/1999/194

The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, sent a letter today to His Excellency Mr. Benjamin W. Mkapa, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, to express his heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the United Republic of Tanzania on the death of Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere on October 14, 1999.

Speaking personally and on behalf of his colleagues at WIPO, the Director General paid tribute to the statesmanship of the late former President, which Dr. Idris said had been characterized by unparalleled wisdom, stature, compassion and integrity. Dr. Idris paid homage to the late Mr. Nyerere's commitment to the people of the United Republic of Tanzania and to the continent of Africa. The Director General said that Mr. Nyerere was a beacon and a source of strength for all those who worked to ensure that Africa assumed its rightful place in international affairs and the global economy.

Despite his courageous battle with ill health, Mr. Nyerere took an active interest in the work of WIPO in recent years. He was a founding member and leading figure in the WIPO Policy Advisory Commission (PAC) which held its inaugural session in Geneva in April 1999. During this meeting, Mr. Nyerere stressed the importance of assisting developing countries in establishing effective intellectual property systems to promote higher levels of economic and social development and greater self-reliance.

The Policy Advisory Commission is a purely advisory body which was established to assist the Director General in identifying policies to deal with new and emerging trends in intellectual property within a rapidly changing global technological landscape. It meets on an annual basis and is composed of eminent personalities with a proven leadership track-record.
