Exhibition on Creativity in Hong Kong SAR Opens at WIPO

Geneva, September 25, 2007
PR/2007/519

An exhibition showcasing various facets of creativity in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) was inaugurated on Monday evening at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), coinciding with the opening day of the annual session of the WIPO Assemblies.  The exhibition, "HK Creativity – Intellectual Property in Hong Kong, China," has been organized jointly by WIPO and the Government of the People’s Republic of China, in cooperation with the Government of the Hong Kong SAR.

Speaking at the inauguration, WIPO Director General, Dr. Kamil Idris, said the exhibition “showcases excellence in the cultural industries that has brought economic success, international recognition and respect to Hong Kong SAR." The Director General thanked the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, the Intellectual Property Department of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, as well as the artists and designers whose works are featured in the exhibition.

Mr. Tian Lipu, Commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office of China, said “This exhibition, covering a variety of sectors and spanning several decades, displays the achievements of Hong Kong talents, and highlights the progress in Hong Kong’s intellectual property regime and its social and economic developments. It enables you to fully appreciate Hong Kong’s past growth, present prosperity and bright future, in which I take great happiness and pride.”

Also speaking at the inauguration, Mr. Stephen Selby, Director of the Intellectual Property Department of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, pointed out that the exhibition “includes both Asian and Western elements {and} reflects some of the creative talent that has brought Hong Kong, “Asia’s World City”, to where it is: the “Kung Fu” movie genre, innovative fashion and graphic designs.”

The exhibition features an exclusive combination of art works, designs, fashion items, and films that characterize and reflect Hong Kong SAR’s diversity and creative talent. These include a selection of clips from films that have marked Hong Kong SAR’s film history, award-winning poster designs, calligraphic works, including street graffiti that has been used by a leading fashion designer.

Famed Hong Kong actor, Jackie Chan addressed a recorded video message to delegates attending the exhibition saying it served “to display the achievements of Hong Kong’s creative industries and arts in a year when Hong Kong people are celebrating the tenth anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China.” Mr. Chan said “Intellectual property is a driving force for innovation and creativity. It also contributes significantly to investment, research, as well as economic development. I am very pleased and take great pride in being a member of the creative industries in Hong Kong. We have a well-established, comprehensive and robust intellectual property system to protect the fruits of creativity.”

Mr. Chan further added “WIPO and its member states have long been toiling to raise the standards of intellectual property protection worldwide. On behalf of the Hong Kong arts community, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and continued support to both WIPO and the representatives of its member countries gathering here today for your efforts.” The full message can be seen at https://www.wipo.int/multimedia/cn/press_release/index.html.

The exhibition is open to the public from October 4 to October 12, 2007.
