WIPO Organized Successful IP Week in Ethiopia

IP Week in Ethiopia was held by Division for Africa of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in cooperation with the government of Ethiopia, and Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority (EIPA) from November 4 to 8, 2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event focused on strengthening the capacity of key stakeholders, including universities, research institutions, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and policymakers by enhancing the effective use of intellectual property (IP) for economic and social development. This initiative was supported by Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global).
Empowering SMEs with Intellectual Property
On November 4 and 5, a National Workshop on IP for Innovative and Competitive SMEs was held, providing participants with valuable insights into leveraging IP for business growth and competitiveness. The opening ceremony featured welcome remarks by Mr. Woldu Baraki, Director General of the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority (EIPA), and a keynote address by Dr. Alebachew Nigussie, Director General of Ethiopian Enterprise Development. During the session, participants enthusiastically discussed the needs and challenges of SMEs. Attendees expressed their appreciation to WIPO and EIPA for the workshop, which broadened their understanding of the role of IP in business success.
Strengthening Policy Engagement on IP
On November 6, the Capacity Building and Awareness Raising Seminar for Policy Makers brought together high-level officials, including two State Ministers, 21 members of parliament, and representatives from various government agencies. The keynote address was delivered by Her Excellency Dr. Fozia Amin, State Minister of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, emphasizing the need to integrate IP into national and sectoral development policies. Discussions highlighted the role of IP in fostering innovation, economic growth, and Ethiopia’s engagement with WIPO-administered conventions.
Advancing Institutional IP Policies for Universities and R&D Institutions
From November 7 to 8, the National Workshop on Institutional IP Policy Development for Universities and Research and Development Institutions convened university vice presidents, senior officials from R&D institutions, and relevant government representatives. The sessions underscored the importance of developing institutional IP policies, managing IP assets, and promoting technology transfer and commercialization.
His Excellency Dr. Baysa Bedada, State Minister of the Ministry of Innovation in Ethiopia, participated in the wrap-up discussion and delivered closing remarks, acknowledging WIPO’s ongoing support in strengthening Ethiopia’s IP ecosystem. Participants commended the program, recognizing the critical role of IP in fostering innovation and institutional development.

IP Week in Ethiopia served as a platform to build capacity, raise awareness, and foster collaboration among key stakeholders. The event reinforced Ethiopia’s commitment to leveraging IP for sustainable economic transformation and innovation-driven growth.
