WIPO at the Fourth Shanghai International Arbitration Forum

On November 9, the Fourth Shanghai International Arbitration Forum was held in Shanghai, China. WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Shanghai Service was one of the supporting organizations of the Forum.

Mr. Ignacio de Castro, Director of IP Disputes and External Relations Division, WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center, attended the Forum online and delivered a keynote speech. Mr. de Castro presented recent developments of WIPO ADR options for IP and technology disputes, especially for disputes concerning Research and Development (R&D) and Technology Transfer, Life Sciences, and fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms for standard-essential patents (SEPs). The use of WIPO mediation and arbitration for IP and technology disputes in China was also introduced.

Themed "Green, Smart, and Shared Development", the Forum is a supporting activity of the 5th China International Import Expo (CIIE) co-hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Justice, the Council for the Promotion of International Trade Shanghai, and the Shanghai Arbitration Association. Mr. Liu Zhiqiang, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Justice of China, Mr. Peng Chenlei, Vice Mayor of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, Ms. Anna Joubin-Bret, Secretary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and Ms. Maria Chiara Malaguti, President of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) delivered opening remarks. More than 200 attendees from international organizations as well as arbitral institutions, law firms, associations and universities from over 10 countries and regions participated in this Forum.
