Fred Joutz

Fred Joutz joined The George Washington University Department of Economics in 1988. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Washington in 1987. His areas of research interest are macro-econometrics, energy economics, time series, and forecasting. His teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate courses in macroeconomics, applied econometrics and finance, money and banking, and energy economics.

He contributes macroeconomic forecasts (known as the Benchmark Forecasts) to the Survey of Professional Forecasters (formerly the ASA/NBER Quarterly Outlook) produced by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and the Ifo Institute for Economic Research . He is an associate editor for Energy Economics  and the International Journal of Forecasting .

He has served as a technical advisor/consultant on economic modeling and forecasting for the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and other private and public organizations. Prior to joining the Department of Economics he was a Visiting Professor at Oberlin College. His undergraduate degree was in International Economics and Politics from the University of Maryland. Before attending graduate school he was a research assistant at Resources for the Future .

He enjoys camping, fishing, sports, and watching his four children participate in swimming, soccer, baseball, and robotics competitions.
