Year of Version 1996 Dates Entry into force: July 24, 1996 Enacted: July 24, 1996 Type of Text IP-related Laws Subject Matter Copyright and Related Rights (Neighboring Rights), Enforcement of IP and Related Laws, IP Regulatory Body, Other Notes The Broadcasting Act 1996 (Chapter 55), among others, makes provisions about the broadcasting in digital form of television and sound programme services and the broadcasting in that form on television or radio frequencies of other services; amends the Broadcasting Act 1990; makes provisions about rights to televise sporting and other events; and provides for the establishment and functions of a Broadcasting Standards Commission, and for the dissolution of the Broadcasting Standards Council. The Act is structured into VIII parts and 11 schedules. In particular, Part VII (sections 137 to 141) deals with copyright and related matters. Schedule 9, established under section 138 of Part VII, provides for the amendments of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 in relation to cable programme services. Part III (sections 73 to 96) refers to the amendments of the Broadcasting Act 1990. Schedule 2, established under section 73 of Part III, provides amendments to the Broadcasting Act 1990 relating to restrictions on holding of licenses. Schedule 8, established under section 136 of Part VI ('The Birtish roadcasting Corporation'), provides amendments to the Broadcasting Act 1990 relating to services provided by BBC companies; and Schedule 10, established under section 148(1) of Part VIII ('Miscellaneous and general'), includes a number of minor and consequential amendments to the said Act.
