Global Innovation Index
The Global Innovation Index 2026 (GII) takes the pulse of innovation against a background of economic and geopolitical recalibration, shifting investment patterns and rapid advances in frontier technologies. It reveals the most innovative economies in the world, ranking the innovation performance of 139 economies and the world's top 100 innovation clusters, while tracking the main global innovation trends and highlighting innovation strengths and weaknesses.
Envisioned to capture as complete a picture of innovation as possible, the Index comprises around 80 indicators, including measures on the policy environment, education, infrastructure and knowledge creation of each economy.
The different metrics that the GII offers help to monitor performance and benchmark developments against economies within the same region or income group.

About the Global Innovation Index
Since its inception in 2007 as a magazine article, the GII has evolved into an instrument that has shaped the innovation measurement and policy agenda becoming a cornerstone of economic policymaking. An increasing number of governments systematically analyze their annual GII results and design policy responses to improve their innovation performance.
Published annually, the core of the GII provides performance measures and ranks close to 140 economies on their innovation ecosystems. The Index is built on a rich dataset – the collection of about 80 indicators from international public and private sources – going beyond the traditional measures of innovation since the definition of innovation has broadened.
In addition, the GII identifies the world’s top 100 science and technology clusters, tracks global innovation trends with the GII Global Innovation Tracker and takes up a “special innovation theme” every two years.
