The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) – one of the leading sources of international trademark applications – has joined Madrid e-Filing, the Madrid System’s secure digital filing service. This soft launch marks the beginning of the USPTO’s transition from its Trademark Electronic Application System International (TEASi) to Madrid e-Filing for outbound international trademark applications based on U.S. trademark applications and registrations.
US applicants can now file international trademark applications directly through Madrid e-Filing. TEASi will remain available until September 30, 2026. From October 1, 2026, Madrid e-Filing will become the sole platform for filing new outbound international trademark applications.
What is Madrid e-Filing?
Madrid e-Filing lets international trademark registration applicants:
- File online
- Communicate directly with their Office of Origin
- Receive and respond to irregularity notices issued by WIPO
The service imports key information from the applicant’s basic trademark application or registration, saving time and reducing the risk of filing errors.
Create your WIPO Account
You need a WIPO Account to use Madrid e-Filing. If you do not already have one, create a WIPO Account before starting your application.
Tip: Use the same email address for your WIPO Account, your Madrid e-Filing application, and any international trademark registrations you hold or manage. This helps eMadrid connect your applications and registrations to your personal eMadrid workbench, where you can track status, access documents, manage payments, receive notifications, and collaborate with colleagues or representatives.
Your WIPO Account also gives you access to all the Madrid System’s online tools and services available through eMadrid for managing international trademark registrations – including renewals, changes of name or address, changes in ownership, limitations, subsequent designations, payments, and portfolio monitoring.
How to file through Madrid e-Filing
You can access Madrid e-Filing through eMadrid or the USPTO website.
Through eMadrid
- Log in to eMadrid with your WIPO Account
- Go to “Prepare your application”
- Enter “United States of America” in the “Get started” box and click “Get started with Madrid e-Filing”
- Click “New application”
- Select “US – United States of America” from the list of Offices
- Choose “Import basic application or registration”
- Follow the prompts to complete your request, pay all relevant WIPO fees, and submit your international trademark application.
Through the USPTO website
- Go to the USPTO’s transition to Madrid e-Filing webpage
- If you don’t already have a WIPO Account, click “Get started creating your WIPO Account”
- Click “Give it a try now”
- Follow steps 4 to 7 above.
Changes at a glance
- July 31 to September 30, 2026: US applicants can file through either TEASi or Madrid e-Filing
- October 1, 2026: New outbound international trademark applications based on US trademark applications or registrations must be filed through Madrid e-Filing
- Payments: WIPO fees will be paid directly to WIPO in Swiss francs. Check available Madrid System payment methods.
- Communication: US applicants can communicate with the USPTO through Madrid e-Filing and respond more easily to WIPO irregularity notices.
