Relevant differences between the UDRP and the Policy

The Policy applies to domain names that are identical or similar to a name or mark in which the complainant has rights.

The UDRP requires the complainant to prove that registration and use of a domain name is in bad faith, whereas under the Policy a complainant must assert that the registration of a domain name, in the hands of the respondent, is an Abusive Registration. This means that the domain name either (i) was registered or otherwise acquired in a manner which, at the time when the registration or acquisition took place, took unfair advantage of or was unfairly detrimental to the complainant's rights; or (ii) is being or has been used in a manner which has taken unfair advantage of or has been unfairly detrimental to the complainant's rights.

A complainant may seek to have a domain name transferred, suspended or cancelled.

The Policy establishes a mediation stage described in its article 10. Within three (3) working days of receipt of the complainant’s reply (or the expiry of the deadline for the complainant to submit a reply), the Registry will begin to conduct mediation. If the parties do not achieve an acceptable resolution through mediation within ten (10) working days, the parties will be invited to pay for an expert decision. Once payment has been completed, an expert will be appointed who will decide the complaint on the basis of the parties’ submissions and the Policy.

 Registration of .UK domain names is unrestricted. Additional criteria apply under the eligibility and allocation rules for each second level domain.

Supported characters

.UK domain names support ASCII characters.

  • - may have a maximum of 64 characters;
  • - allow the twenty-six unaccented Roman letters (i.e. a-z inclusive), the ten western digits (i.e. 0-9 inclusive), and hyphens;
  • - may not begin or end with a hyphen.
  • - may not begin or end with a dash;
  • - may not have dashes in the third and fourth positions, except for IDNs
