Year of Version 2006 Dates Entry into force: July 30, 1980 Enacted: January 1, 1980 Type of Text Constitution/Basic Law Subject Matter Other Notes The Constitution of Vanuatu, which is the supreme law of the nation of Vanuatu, was enacted on the Day of Vanuatuan Independence, July 30, 1980 and entered into force on the same date. The current Constitution of Vanuatu is contained in the Laws of the Republic of Vanuatu - Consolidated Edition 2006. The legal system of Vanuatu is based on English common law, French civil law and indigenous customary law. Many legislations of United Kingdom still have application in Vanuatu. For example, the only patent legislation that exists in Vanuatu is the "Registration of UK Patent Act" and similarly the only trademark legislation is the "Registration of United Kingdoms Trademarks". The Constitution does not contain provisions that refer to intellectual property rights. However, Section 5 (j), Part I "Fundamental Rights", Chapter 2 recognises the protection of property rights to Vanuatu people, providing in part: "...protection for ...other property and from unjust deprivation of property" (see page 6)
