AI and IP Clearing House

AI has become a strategic priority for many governments across the globe. Strategies for the development of AI capacity and AI regulatory measures are being adopted with increasing frequency.
WIPO continuously collates and publishes the main government instruments of relevance to AI and IP with the aid of the Member States. Member States are invited to inform WIPO about any updates in their policies, regulation and case law.

Toolkits and publications

WIPO has published a range of guides, papers and factsheets to help policymakers, businesses, and other stakeholders navigate the evolving relationship between IP and AI. These resources include a 2020 issues paper that highlighted the whole range of the AI and IP challenges, many of which are still being debated today, a policy toolkit for addressing the impact of AI on the innovation ecosystem, a practical guide to help businesses understand the IP implications of using generative AI tools and a wealth of fact sheets. WIPO Technology Trends 2019: Artificial Intelligence documents how AI-powered technologies are rapidly entering global markets and brings together viewpoints from experts at the cutting edge of AI. It is a contribution that aims to provide decision makers in the public and private sectors with an improved knowledge base for discussions on the future of AI and the policy and regulatory framework for this fast-moving area.

Collaboration between WIPO and UN agencies on AI and IP

The IP discussions are closely linked to many other ongoing discussions around the regulation of AI. WIPO partners with UN agencies inclulding the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to help innovators navigate IP and commercialization approaches for AI-enabled technologies. This includes the Global Initiative on AI for Health (GI-AI4H) by WIPO, ITU and WHO. WIPO is also actively engaging in the implementation of the Global Digital Compact and has been co-leading Cluster 3 of the UN AI Governance dialogue together with UNICC.  

Capacity building on IP and AI

WIPO also delivers capacity-building initiatives, including IP management clinics and regional training programs, supporting startups, researchers and public officials in leveraging IP for AI-driven innovation.

WIPO, AI and IP: A Virtual Experience (archived)

The online exhibition, "WIPO: AI and IP, A Virtual Experience" held from September 2020 to March 2021 sought to foster a wider understanding of the relationship between IP Policy and AI and focused on examples of the use of AI in art, music, technology and entertainment.
