Authorization (Signature) Required for International Trademark Registration Changes
Changes requiring authorization include:
- Cancel registration (partial or total)
- Change holder details
- Change ownership (partial or total)
- Manage representative
- Renounce protection.
We will gradually expand this to cover all relevant transactions in eMadrid.

How authorization works
Email verification is essential. We must have valid email addresses for:
- The trademark holder AND
- The representative (if applicable)
…for each international trademark registration that they own or manage.
When you request changes, we verify your identity by matching the email address of the WIPO Account you used to login to eMadrid with your on-record email. If they don't match, we'll send an electronic authorization (signature) request – typically to the on-record email address of the representative.
Without on-record email addresses, we cannot verify your identity or send the authorization request – which means the request cannot be submitted.
No email on record? What should you do?
Provide your email address as quickly as possible:
- Check email status: Use “Madrid Monitor” – Search by international trademark registration number or holder name, for example, and click on “Email Address Status” in the “Filters”.
- Add (or update) email: Log into "Change holder details" (holders) or "Manage representative" (representatives) using your WIPO Account. (Don’t have one? Create a WIPO Account now.)
Once you’ve added (or updated) your email address, log into eMadrid using a WIPO Account with the same email address to access your international trademark registration(s) in your workbench.
Are assets missing from your workbench?
Who authorizes change requests?
We typically send the authorization (signature) request to the on-record representative.
The holder receives requests when:
- No representative is appointed
- Appointing or cancelling a representative
