Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Interchange (AIII)

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Infrastructure Interchange (AIII, pronounced “A-triple-I”) is a WIPO initiative that facilitates global dialogue on the technical and operational aspects of the intellectual property system in the context of artificial intelligence.

As AI systems operate across sectors and borders, existing infrastructure — often developed for specific uses in different industries — faces new challenges. But effectively deployed infrastructure also presents an opportunity to chart a path forward through those challenges, as it has for prior disruptions of the intellectual property system. AIII is a neutral panel on AI for creators, rights-holders, developers, and other experts to exchange ideas and explore practical solutions.

In the digital age, IP infrastructure — such as watermarks, authentication tools, standards, metadata, digital identifiers, rights management and content recognition systems, and digital distribution frameworks has been developed by rightsholders and creators to build new business models that safeguard their rights. Typically, infrastructure is developed by the private sector because to work effectively, infrastructure must reflect both the needs of creators and rightsholders and the diverse business models, workflows and conventions of different industries. Experience shows that the most effective and sustainable solutions emerge from collaboration between creators, rights holders, and tech companies to determine how best to shape the systems that support their industries.

At the same time, WIPO is a member state driven organization that is committed to providing transparency. And the work of the AIII will ultimately allow WIPO’s Member States to make more informed policy decisions based on technical and practical reality.

AIII does not set policy or legal standards. Instead, it focuses on how technical systems and tools can effectively support creators, copyright owners, and innovators while also promoting the development of AI technology in a rapidly evolving environment.

AIII is a joint project of the IP and Frontier Technologies Division and the Copyright Management Division.

The official launch of AIII will take place on March 17, 2026 at WIPO Headquarters in Geneva and online.

In the time since AIII was announced and the Launch Event, WIPO has produced a video podcast series—The Road to AIII—to set the stage for this initiative. Over five episodes, the series explored topics including: what IP infrastructure is; how infrastructure has been developed and deployed in various industries; the impact of prior technological disruptions on IP infrastructure; and what the emergence of Generative AI means for existing and potential IP infrastructure. In this panel discussion, guests from throughout the series will reflect on themes that emerged and the road that has been traveled to arrive at the launch of AIII.

11.30 – 12.15 Panel discussion: Lessons learned from technical collaborations and how to apply in the age of AI

The foundational goal of AIII is to foster collaboration between different stakeholders on vital technical and operational issues at the intersection of IP and AI. Such collaboration is not always easy to achieve and there are inherent challenges, particularly in areas where there may also be complicated legal and policy questions in parallel to the technical challenges. But there are successful efforts at collaboration across the table between IP owners and technology companies. In this panel discussion, speakers who have experience working on such efforts will share their perspective on lessons learned and offer insight into “do’s and don’ts” of fostering effective collaboration.
