Are you interested to explore the integral role IP can play in SME business strategy and how it can propel business advancement? Join a virtual symposium co-organized by the WIPO Japan Office and the IP for Business team to learn more about the link between Intellectual Property and running a successful business.
It has been recognized that in general, firms that protect their intellectual property (IP) are more likely to increase their revenues through leveraging their IP assets, than those that do not. WIPO is aiming to improve the understanding of IP management through the development of tools throughout the innovation process.
In December the Symposium on IP for Innovation in the Global Age will be organised with financing from the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global, and under the themes of Global Competitiveness, Open Innovation and SDGs, presenting WIPO tools and platforms that can accelerate innovation and bridge between SMEs and innovation partners. Bringing together innovators, entrepreneurs, industry leaders and intermediaries, we aim to discuss how enterprises, including those with a green product or technology, can better utilize IP as part of their business strategies at the global level.
Please join us to enhance your knowledge on IP strategy and to gain insight into the latest trends of IP commercialization in a business environment. The event will consist of two half days and be joined by business leaders, experts and startups representing various industries both in Japan and world.

Japan has been ranked 13th in the recent Global Innovation Index, but indexes on the ease of starting a business and new business population suggest there are challenges Japan needs to address. With this in mind, the session will introduce Japanese SME support activities in order to enhance vitality, invention and start up. Also, the session will be joined by a Japanese company to share a first-hand success story on how they turned the pandemic into opportunity using idea and IP and expanded business will be shared.

Startup Ecosystem Rankings of 2020 published by StartupBlink ranked Canada the fourth in the startup ecosystem ranking, following US, UK and Israel; and WIPO’s Global Innovation Index the third in its ease of starting business ranking. This session will invite an IP expert to share Canada’s engagements in promoting innovation and in creating new values for the startups.

About IP for Business Division
The IP for Business Division (IPBD) is responsible for developing tools and services and implementing programs to support enterprises maximize their potential through intellectual property. The division works with SME support institutions and other intermediaries and supports the development of innovation ecosystems, including by helping inventors access the patent system and developing the patent drafting profession.
