Blockchain and Intellectual Property

Blockchain is one of the frontier technologies, which is significantly affecting the way businesses operate while revolutionizing numerous innovation and creative ecosystems.

Given that blockchain technology affects every industry, it is in interest of intellectual property (IP) community to explore the implications of blockchain technology on IP and find suitable models for blockchain usage in the IP space.

White Paper Presentation

Blockchain and IP ecosystems

The member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) established the Blockchain Task Force under the Committee on WIPO Standards (CWS) with the mandate described in the CWS Task No. 59. As part of the mandate, the Blockchain Task Force is drafting a new WIPO standard to support the potential applications of blockchain technologies within IP ecosystems by addressing challenges including interoperability, governance and regulation.

WIPO organized events on Blockchain and IP, in which speakers and participants from private and public sectors attended and discussed various topics including blockchain technology, its implication in IP ecosystem, its use cases and possible collaboration.

WIPO will continue, in close collaboration with the member states and other stakeholders to lead and coordinate efforts on regulation, governance and standardization of blockchain in IP ecosystems.
