Year of Version 1973 Dates Adopted: March 30, 1973 Type of Text IP-related Laws Subject Matter Plant Variety Protection, Enforcement of IP and Related Laws, Other Notes Argentina adopted through Law No. 24.376 the 1978 Act of the UPOV Convention. In application of Article 2 of the 1978 Act, breeder's right can be recognized by either a specific right of protection or by a patent.
Argentina chose to grant a specific right through 'Law No. 20.247 of March 30, 1973, on Seed and Phytogenetic Developments' (also called 'Seed Law No. 20.247', and not by industrial property (patents).

Chapters I and II, according to Article 51 of the said Law No. 20.247, took effect from the date of enactment of the Act, while the other chapters and Articles 49 and 50 took effect six months following enactment.
The application of Article 9 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is postponed for eighteen months following enactment.
