WIPO Confirms New Senior Management Team

WIPO’s multilingual terminology portal gives access to scientific and technical terms derived from patent documents.  It helps promote accurate and consistent use of terms across different languages, and makes it easier to search and share scientific and technical knowledge.

Developed at WIPO by our language experts and terminologists, the database currently contains 14,951 concepts and 91,152 terms - and is constantly growing.

Eight Great Technologies: Life Sciences, Genomics and Synthetic Biology

This report gives an analysis of the worldwide patent landscape for life sciences, genomics, and synthetic biology. The scope of the search strategy included preparation of mutants and associated screening processes, hybrid cells, and all aspects of recombinant DNA technology. The dataset used for analysis was extracted from worldwide patent databases following detailed discussion and consultation with patent examiners from the Intellectual Property Office who are experts in the field and who, on a day-to-day basis, search, examine and grant patent applications relating to life sciences.

Capacity-Building in the Use of Appropriate Technology Specific Technical and Scientific Information as a Solution for Identified Development Challenges

Building technical and scientific skills and capacity that will allow Least Developed Countries to apply knowledge and technology to meet their social and economic challenges requires the participation of a range of players from individuals to institutions, including inventors, creators, research and development (R&D) centers, academic institutions, manufacturing enterprises, agricultural organizations and health services.  Regulatory, legal and administrative policies have an influence on these players and on their interactions, which in turn determine how knowledge, technology and resources flow among them.

Green Paper on the protection of geographical indications for non-agricultural products – Frequently Asked Questions

A Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign, usually a name, used on goods that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, characteristics or a reputation essentially attributable to that place of origin. Typically, a geographical indication includes or consists of the name of the place of origin of the goods. This name can be collectively used by all enterprises from the given area which manufacture a given product in a prescribed way. Champagne and Prosciutto di Parma are examples of some world-famous GIs.

Am I entitled to Small Entity or Micro Entity fee status?

Many United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) fees are discounted by 50% for applicants and patentees who qualify as "Small Entities", and (through the 2011 Patent Reform Act) by 75% for "Micro Entities". Determining whether or not you fit within the "Small Entity" or "Micro Entity" class or not can be complicated. However, it is important to do it right, because the consequences of claiming Small Entity status when you are, in fact, a Large Entity, can be draconian - complete invalidity of a patent and loss of patent rights due to "fraud on the Patent Office".

The Case against the Protection of Negative Trade Secrets: Sisyhus's Entrepreneurship

The author argues that trade secrets should not protect negative information (failure in research), and that placing such “Negative Trade Secrets” in the public domain would revitalize and invigorate entrepreneurship, research, and development. He also illustrates how his proposed approach can be applied in the existing legal and business regime.
