PATENTSCOPE introduces verified SEP searches

WIPO has enhanced its global patent database, PATENTSCOPE, with the addition of a new feature allowing users to search for verified standard essential patents (SEPs).

The latest enhancement builds on “Declared SEPs” functionality introduced in 2025 which already enabled searches for patents that patentholders have declared as being potentially essential to a technical standard.

The new feature takes that initiative a step further by identifying patents that have been objectively verified as SEPs by independent experts on behalf of a patent pool administrator. The first patent pool administrator to provide verified essentiality data is Sisvel. WIPO is engaging with stakeholders to further expand verified data sources.
