Madrid System Members
WIPO’s international trademark system – the Madrid System – encompasses 115 members [PDF] covering 131 countries and representing more than 80% of global trade. Our membership continues to grow as new jurisdictions recognize the System's benefits.
Anyone who is a national of or has a domicile or business in a Madrid System member and has filed for or registered a trademark (“basic mark”) there, can seek protection of their mark in any or all of the other 130 members simultaneously.
As new members join the Madrid System, the geographical scope of an existing international trademark registration can be expanded easily.
Key facts
- All Madrid System members are party to the Madrid Protocol – the governing treaty of the Madrid System.
- Applications for international trademark registrations are filed through the trademark owner’s local intellectual property (IP) Office (Office of Origin).
- Each designated member’s domestic laws determine the scope of protection of an international trademark registration.
