Madrid e-Filing: Why Madrid eFiling?

Madrid e-Filing reduces application processing times and irregularities for IP Offices, while simultaneously offering applicants a convenient and time-saving alternative to paper forms. With such advantages, Madrid e-Filing is WIPO's preferred method of receiving international applications.

Benefits

  • Clean data = expedited certification — Madrid e-Filing can be configured to retrieve data from an IP Office's own trademark registry, or from WIPO’s Global Brand Database or TMview. Applicants simply enter the application or registration number associated with a basic mark and all related data is automatically imported. As a result, IP Offices receive a clean set of trademark data identical to that of the basic mark, making the certification process quick and efficient.

  • Fewer irregularities — Madrid e-Filing guides applicants, ensuring that all the required information is correctly completed (based on which IP Offices are designated and the details of the basic mark); any fields that are not relevant for a particular application do not appear, further simplifying the application process for the users.

Similarly, an application that is missing any required information (for example, the fee for a mark in color or additional documents required by some IP Offices) cannot be submitted, minimizing the risk of irregularities and saving applicants time and money.

  • Customizable interface available in any language — WIPO is prepared to translate the Madrid e-Filing user interface into an IP Office's working language as a courtesy and at no cost. This is a notable benefit for national or regional IP Offices whose domestic working language is not a Madrid filing language (English, French or Spanish).

  • In-app communication of irregularity letters – this new Madrid e-Filing feature gives the possibility to directly receive and respond to irregularity letters issued by WIPO, without leaving the interface and offering an all-in-one solution to users and IP Offices alike.
