Geographical indications and WIPO’s Lisbon System
Transcript
What do Darjeeling Tea, Café de Colombia, Prosciutto di Parma, Kampot Pepper, Champagne, Tequila, Argan Oil, Swiss Watches, Chulucanas and Bohemia Cristal have in common? Yes, they are all well-known products that have prestige among consumers, but the story doesn't end there...
The taste, qualities, aesthetics and reputation of these products are all deeply tied to their geographical origins. Each product has a legacy built upon unique environmental conditions and local traditions from their specific regions or origin. In the legal world, they are known as "appelations of origin" or "geographical indications".
The World Intellectual Property Organization runs an international registration system that makes it easier to protect these product names and their legacy. Known as the Lisbon System for International Registration of Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications, it ensures - for example - that only pepper that genuinely comes from a specific region in Cambodia and meets the predefined traditional production requirements can be called and sold as "Kampot Pepper".
This special protection is available in every country of the Lisbon System. To spice up their sales, all the pepper producers need to do is apply through the World Intellectual Property Organization for the protection of their region-specific brand.
It's not just the Cambodian pepper producers that benefit from the Lisbon System. Producers of many other traditional local products do too. The small-scale farmers, the artisans and the business owners, they all want stronger protection for their local and traditional products in the global markets.
And the consumer? They get assurance about the quality, authenticity and traceability of those products. The Lisbon System s an all-in-one solution for producers seeking protection for their geographical indications and appellations of origin in multiple countries.
