The Bahamas Joins the PCT

The Bahamas has joined the PCT, WIPO’s international patent system. The country will become the 159th member of the PCT Union.

On May 19, 2026, The Bahamas deposited its instrument of accession to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) with WIPO.

The PCT enters into force for The Bahamas on August 19, 2026.

The Bahamas is the 21st member of the Association of Caribbean States to join the PCT, a move that strengthens the economic integration and competitiveness of the region.

What does this mean for you?

Starting August 19, 2026:

  • Applicants and inventors in The Bahamas can file a single international application under the PCT to apply for patent protection in the territories of all the PCT System’s members, known as “Contracting States”.
  • Bahamian innovators benefit from a consolidated path to protecting their inventions in new markets – including in major export destinations such as the United States, Canada, and Europe.
  • Foreign innovators and companies can use the PCT System to seek patent protection for their inventions in The Bahamas.
