WIPO IP Analytics Community of Practice (CoP)

The WIPO IP Analytics Community of Practice (CoP) is a global network dedicated to the advancement of intellectual property (IP) analytics. Comprising representatives from national and regional IP offices and intergovernmental organizations, the Community serves as a hub for technical IP analytics experts to meet, network and exchange views on the latest methodological approaches, data sources and emerging ideas.

Mission and objectives

Launched in 2023, and established pursuant to the WIPO Medium-Term Strategic Plan (2022–2026), the IP Analytics CoP aims to support evidence-based policymaking and foster technological innovation. The Community covers the full spectrum of registered IP rights, including patents, trademarks, and industrial designs. The strategic objectives of the CoP are to:
  • Promote IP analytics as a key instrument for fostering innovation;
  • Strengthen capacity within IP offices to conduct and apply high-quality analytics;
  • Share state-of-the-art methodologies, tools, and good practices;
  • Facilitate peer support and mutual learning among national and regional authorities; and
  • Foster international cooperation on key analytical challenges.

The CoP Charter

The Community operates under a guiding Charter adopted by all members. This framework ensures transparency and effectiveness, defining the CoP’s governance structure and core values. All members commit to principles of openness, inclusivity, voluntary engagement, and the active sharing of knowledge to drive collective progress.

Working groups

A number of CoP working groups have been created to deepen expertise and foster focused collaboration. These groups allow members to co-create solutions, address specific challenges, and capture valuable know-how through peer learning. There are currently four active working groups, each focusing on a critical area of IP analytics:
  1. Methodological Approaches: Sharing and refining technical processes for data analysis.
  2. Data Visualization and Data Storytelling: Best practices for presenting complex IP data effectively.
  3. AI and LLMs for IP Analytics: Exploring the application of Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models in the field.
  4. Benefits, Impact, and Use of IP Analytics: Understanding and maximizing the socio-economic value of IP data in decision-making.

Events and collaboration

The CoP maintains an active calendar of engagements designed to foster mutual learning, strengthen professional networks, and advance the field of IP analytics. Through a combination of in-person gatherings and virtual sessions, the CoP ensures continuous dialogue among members. The working language for all CoP meetings and events is English.

CoP Annual Symposium

The cornerstone of the Community’s calendar is the CoP Annual Symposium. This in-person gathering brings together representatives from all CoP member organizations to define the strategic direction of the CoP, for members to present recent internal projects, sharing success stories and lessons learned to facilitate peer support, and to provide a unique opportunity for practitioners to build direct relationships with peers from IP offices around the world, facilitating future bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Online knowledge exchange

Between annual gatherings, the CoP stays connected through a regular series of online meetings. These virtual sessions serve as a platform for operational exchange and technical deep-dives.

Working group sessions

Smaller groups of members also participate in regular working group meetings. These topic-specific sessions allow for focused collaboration on the specific themes of each working group.
