The June edition of the WIPO Nigeria webinar monthly webinar series explored strategies for leveraging intellectual property (IP) to enhance Nigeria's tourism sector. The speakers for the session included Mr. Friday Anumba, Director of Special Duties, Nigerian Tourism Development Authority and Ms. Mary Hayrapetyan, Associate Program Officer, Development Agenda Coordination Division, WIPO.
Mr. Anumba outlined the nation's rich cultural assets and current challenges, including weak international promotion and poor data collection. He highlighted key initiatives by the Nigerian Government like the "Tour Nigeria" project and a new digital tourism app designed to attract private investment and reposition Nigeria as a prime business and leisure destination. The NTDA currently contributes 3.6% to the national GDP, with significant potential for growth.
Ms. Hayrapetyan went on to explain how IP tools—such as trademarks, collective marks, and Geographical Indications (GIs)—are vital for branding destinations, protecting local crafts, and ensuring a return on investment. She highlighted WIPO’s readiness to collaborate, encouraging the NTDA to request collaboration through the WIPO Nigeria Office.
The discussion concluded that a strategic partnership between the NTDA and WIPO is crucial. By integrating robust IP protection and branding strategies, Nigeria can build a more attractive and profitable tourism industry, turning its cultural heritage into a sustainable economic driver.
