In Algeria, the celebration goes far beyond a single day, extending throughout the month of April. The activities were launched at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Laghouat in a day of celebration, which included an exhibition on various sporting disciplines, including traditional sports practiced for centuries.

Meanwhile, the University of Constantine 3, in collaboration with the Department of Scientific, Cultural and Sports Activities (DACS) in the Province of Constantine, has launched an interclub challenge bringing together scientific, sports and student clubs, as well as project leaders and innovators, with the aim of stimulating creativity, enhancing innovative ideas and promoting the culture of innovation within the university. In this context, a training session entitled “IDEATION & IP” was held on April 26. Students from the Ligue Scientifique et Technique de Constantine, part of the Ministry of Sports, took part in the training session.

Constantine 1 University, for its part, organized an IP day on April 27, 2026, on the theme “When innovation meets a passion for sport”. The event brought together experts, athletes, teachers and students for conferences and demonstrations, highlighting the link between innovation, health and sports performance. More than 30 innovative projects were presented by students and teachers, covering fields as varied as sport, nutrition, biology, computing and electronics, through prototypes and applications. The day was also marked by concrete public action, notably a blood donation campaign in partnership with the provincial Ibn Badis Hospital, reinforcing the solidarity dimension of the event.

A month of activities around the country

Throughout the month of April, several initiatives were organized in different regions to raise awareness of the importance of IP, with a particular focus on the sports sector.

Initiatives included:

  • Awareness-raising workshops for young athletes and sports science students
  • Trademark protection training for sports clubs and associations
  • Conferences on athletes’ image rights
  • Exhibitions highlighting innovations in sports equipment
  • Meetings between entrepreneurs, start-ups and sportspeople.

They demonstrated that sport today constitutes a veritable economic ecosystem in which IP plays a central role.

Sport and IP: a strategic lever

The choice of this theme highlights an often overlooked aspect: behind every major competition, every innovative piece of equipment and every sports brand lie the IP rights (IPRs) that are essential to their development.

In Algeria, this awareness is particularly important for:

  • encouraging start-ups specializing in sports technologies;
  • protecting local creations (equipment, applications, content); and
  • helping sports talents to manage their image and rights.

Raising awareness to better protect and make use of IP

A key objective of this national mobilization was to raise awareness. In a context where sport is becoming a strategic economic sector, it is essential that all those involved – athletes, trainers and businesspeople – understand how to protect and exploit their intangible assets.

Participants emphasized the need to reinforce legal and technical support to enable project leaders to take full advantage of their innovations.

Consolidating momentum

The celebration of World IP Day in Algeria reflects a desire to place innovation at the heart of all sectors, this time including the sports sector.
With multiple initiatives throughout the month of April, Algeria confirmed its commitment to promoting a culture of IP, capable of supporting creativity, entrepreneurship and the development of a modern, competitive sports economy.

This year’s event highlighted the fact that sport is not just about physical performance, but also a fertile ground for technological innovation and intellectual creation.

Conferences and panels organized across the country explored themes such as:

  • brand protection for sports clubs and events;
  • broadcasting rights and their economic impact;
  • innovation in sports equipment; and
  • enhancing the image of athletes.

This approach highlighted how IP helps to shape the sports economy, protecting technical inventions, as well as visual identities and media content.
