Bangkok, Thailand, June 24–26, 2025
The Training Seminar on IP Valuation took place in Bangkok from June 24 to 26, 2025. It was jointly organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) of Thailand, with support from the Funds-in-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT-Japan).
The training forms part of a broader initiative launched in 2023 to support the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2016–2025. It aims to promote regionally aligned principles and practices in IP valuation, thereby strengthening transparency and trust in IP-related transactions across the ASEAN region. The ASEAN IP Valuation Toolkit, developed under this initiative, serves as the foundational resource for the training seminars.
Opening Remarks Emphasize the Strategic Value of IP
In her opening remarks, Ms. Chiyawan Chongvatana, Assistant Director General (International Intellectual Property), DIP, noted that “in today’s dynamic economy, intellectual property is a pivotal asset, yet its true value often remains critically underestimated.”
Tailored Training for IP Valuation Professionals
The three-day training targeted IP valuation practitioners with basic knowledge of valuation methodologies, technology transfer professionals working in universities and research institutions, as well as representatives from business and government. The first day was held in a hybrid format and attended by nearly 60 participants, including TISC staff, entrepreneurs, and inventors. The second and third days provided an in-depth program for valuation professionals, attracting 40 participants on-site. We were pleased to welcome also regional representatives from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Singapore.
The substantive sessions were delivered by leading experts in the field. The training opened with a session by Mr. Michael Kos, IP Finance and Valuation Specialist at WIPO, who introduced the fundamentals of IP and IP valuation. Mr. Pairat Monthapan, former President of the Thai Valuers Association, provided an overview of national valuation practices, including regulatory standards and current trends. Mr. Krissada Jutimongkonkul, Chairperson of the MSc Program and Head of the Innovation Valuation Advisory Center (IVAC) at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, conducted a comprehensive series of sessions covering financial concepts, deterministic and probabilistic valuation approaches, the valuation process, and the use of input data and qualitative assessments.
