Strengthening IP Valuation Practices in Hungary

On 2 December, the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office (HIPO) held an IP Valuation Workshop with the strategic participation of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to discuss how valuation practices can become more transparent, consistent and credible. As intangible assets now account for most enterprise value, participants emphasized the need for purpose-driven valuation approaches aligned with international standards and supported by proper IP management within companies.

WIPO’s international expertise provided key insights throughout the workshop. WIPO outlined its pivotal role in fostering dialogue among stakeholders and advancing potential pilot initiatives in IP-backed finance.

Hungary stands at a critical turning point. Current valuation practices remain at an early stage, with IP assets often absent from company decision making and financial reporting, and financial institutions rarely considering IP as collateral. Nevertheless, promising cases and growing interest from investors and advisors reflect accelerating momentum. The workshop marked a decisive step toward strengthening shared understanding among stakeholders and laying the groundwork for an emerging IP finance ecosystem in Hungary, supported by WIPO’s continued leadership and engagement.
