Accelerating Ventures' Growth with IP: Scale Up Your IP Program in Thailand

Thailand's innovation ecosystem gained significant momentum as the fourth Scale Up Your IP pilot program concluded successfully, closing the critical gap between laboratory innovation and commercial success.

The latest cohort of 44 deep-tech ventures from Thailand's R&D community completed the intensive program in Bangkok, gaining practical skills and hands-on experience in IP commercialization strategy.

Organized by WIPO in partnership with the National Innovation Agency (NIA) of Thailand, with support from the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global, this fourth pilot marked the completion of a remarkable year-long pilot series, with four programs delivered within just twelve months since launch.

On behalf of WIPO, Mr. Marco Aleman, Assistant Director General, IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector, highlighted the potential of local innovators and the role of the newly launched WIPO program.

Many breakthroughs that transform our world begin with a single insight in a laboratory or research center. Yet too often, brilliant ideas remain trapped within institutional walls, their potential unrealized. Scale Up Your IP helps ventures use IP to transform these ideas into commercial assets.

The go-to-market challenge

The Scale Up Your IP Program tackles the persistent challenge facing deep-tech ventures: converting breakthrough innovations into profitable businesses.

Promising technologies and viable prototypes need strategic IP foundations to achieve commercial success. Additionally, research-heavy ventures consistently hit roadblocks in IP strategy – from ownership issues with co-founders or academic collaborators, to navigating intricate software licenses and open source dependencies.

The Scale Up Your IP Program moves participants from basic IP awareness to actionable commercial strategy, showing founders how intellectual property becomes a revenue-generating asset that drives funding and market entry.

Hands-on training for immediate results

The intensive training built around 6 specialized modules ensures that ventures integrate IP into their go-to-market strategies early, achieving cost-effective and sustainable growth. These include:

  • Market intelligence gathering through IP databases
  • IP ownership and equity in the spin-off process
  • Brand development for technology products
  • Software licensing and AI policy guidance
  • Investor pitch preparation and due diligence materials
  • Licensing deal structures and partnership negotiations

Thailand ventures experience

After 2 days of intensive training, the 44 Thai deep-tech ventures had a chance to engage in 1-1 consultations to address specific questions and personalize their IP Action Plan accordingly.

Cleantech & Beyond: "The Program provided us with valuable insight about patenting new technology in the future. Very useful R&D session for ventures who want to spin-off their company."

RSU Horizon: “This Program was really worth it, and I will brainstorm an Action Plan with my team – in particular the Brand Strategy session. I hope we can have this annually in Thailand!”

Building global impact through rapid iteration

Since launching in November 2024, WIPO has delivered four successful in-person pilots across multiple regions (Turkey, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Thailand) plus one online program within twelve months. This intensive pilot phase allowed the team to test and refine the program methodology, incorporating improvements and adaptations based on different market conditions and participant feedback.

Scaling for sustainable impact

The program's successful pilot phase has validated strong market demand and created a foundation for sustained growth. WIPO now plans to expand the initiative through a train-the-trainer model, empowering local universities and research incubators to adapt and deliver Scale Up Your IP programs regularly to their innovation communities.

This approach will build a substantial network of IP-trained instructors who can guide emerging deep-tech ventures in acquiring essential commercialization skills, ensuring long-term sustainability and broader ecosystem impact.
