WIPO Director General Daren Tang concluded a two-day official visit to Tashkent from May 27 to 28, 2025, where he discussed the transition of Uzbekistan from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-driven one, with intellectual property (IP) at the heart of its strategy.
Uzbekistan is modernizing its IP laws, with constitutional recognition of IP marking a significant milestone. WIPO pledged support in updating the country’s national IP strategy to align with Uzbekistan’s 2030 strategy as a long-term national development roadmap, emerging technologies like generative AI and to implement on-the-ground initiatives supporting startups and entrepreneurs.
With a dynamic, youthful population and a growing number of IP-trained professionals, Uzbekistan is poised to become a hub for creativity and innovation. WIPO reaffirmed its commitment to helping build a robust IP ecosystem that protects ideas and promotes global competitiveness.
Tashkent Engagements
- Held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov, discussed how IP can power Uzbekistan’s Vision 2030 and fuel innovation-led development.
- Participated in a dialogue with professors and students at Tashkent State University of Law (TSUL), and met participants of WIPO’s IP Management Clinics for Women-led SMEs.
- Discussed future cooperation with the Minister of Justice of Uzbekistan Akbar Tashkulov, as well as the MoU on WIPO’s Arbitration and Mediation Center.
- Engaged with the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Otabek Makhkamov, to explore the potential projects in IP Education.
- Visited the Tashkent Technopark LLC, where representatives informed the Director General of the current production activities undertaken by the residents.
- Shared views on recent Uzbek projects in agriculture with the Minister of Agriculture Abdurakhmonov Ibrokhim.
