6th ASEAN IP Register Regional Coordinators Meeting : Strengthening ASEAN IP Data Sharing

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat and the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) of Lao PDR organized the 6th ASEAN IP Register Regional Coordinators Meeting in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR, from December 16 to 20, 2024, with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global).
The 6th IP Register Meeting convened in person, bringing together 46 officials, including representatives from IP offices across nine ASEAN countries, the Japan Patent Office, and the ASEAN Secretariat.
The meeting provided updates on the progress, challenges, and technical details of the development of advanced data services within the ASEAN IP Register. In addition, Participants engaged in discussions to address technical challenges and explore ways to optimize data uploading process to the ASEAN IP Register.
One of the key breakthroughs was the strong commercial interest in patent full-text data from ASEAN countries, underscoring its importance. Discussions revealed inefficiencies in data flow, prompting a shift towards direct and sustainable access. This development could serve as a model for global IP data sharing, with potential expansion to other regions. Additionally, the meeting helped set the stage for improved coordination in advancing ASEAN’s digital transformation efforts.
