.RO Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy

Relevant differences between the UDRP and the Policy

Whereas the UDRP is limited to the protection of trademark or service mark rights, under the Policy a complainant may rely on (i) a trademark or service mark, or (ii) a geographical indication protected in Romania or by European Union law.

The Policy refers to use of the domain name in a legitimate, noncommercial, or fair manner without the intent to obtain commercial gain to mislead consumers or to harm the trademark, service mark, or protected geographical indication in Romania or under European Union law in question.

It is sufficient for the complainant to prove that either the registration or the use of the domain name is in bad faith, whereas the UDRP requires the complainant to prove both elements.

Courts of Romania.

Romanian where the Respondent has, in the registrant’s contact details, an address in Romania; or English where the Respondent has, in the registrant’s contact details, an address outside Romania; subject to the Panel’s authority to determine otherwise, having regard to the circumstances of the administrative proceeding.

Eligibility Criteria

Registration of .RO domain names is unrestricted. Registration of second level domains such as “.com.ro” and “.org.ro” is restricted to certain categories

Supported characters

.RO domain names support ASCII and IDN characters

  • - may have a maximum of 63 characters;
  • - allow characters ă, â, î, ș, and ț;
  • - may not begin or end with a dash;
  • - may not have dashes in the third and fourth positions, except for IDNs
