The present Copyright Act was promulgated in 1988 as the Copyright Decree of 1988. With the revision of all existing federal legislation, the Decree was redesignated the Copyright Act and contained in Chapter 68, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990.
The Act was amended by the Copyright (Amendment) Decree No. 98 of 1992 and the Copyright (Amendment) Decree No. 42 of 1999. In 2004, the Act was re-codified and is currently referenced as Copyright Act, Chapter 28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
