The Role of Industrial Property in the Protection of Consumers

The study is intended to be a contribution to a work of a far wider scope currently being carried out, in the United Nations system of organizations and elsewhere, on all aspects of consumer protection, with particular reference to the needs of developing countries. This study is limited to aspects of the subject which are within the competence of WIPO. It shows that industrial property laws and institutions can make a valuable contribution to the protection of the interests of consumers.

Model Provisions Concerning the Protection of the Olympic Symbol

On September 26, 1981, a Diplomatic Conference organized in Nairobi, Kenya, under the auspices of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) adopted the Nairobi Treaty on the Protection of the Olympic Symbol. For the implementation of the provisions of that Treaty, WIPO has prepared model provisions concerning the protection of the Olympic symbol.

All States which are party to the Treaty are under the obligation to protect the Olympic symbol - five interlaced rings - against use for commercial purposes (in advertisements, on goods, as a mark, etc.) without the authorization of the International Olympic Committee.

Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property
