Step 2 of 5 – Select Your Trademark Goods and Services:
Identify Where Your Brand Belongs

Selecting the right goods and services is essential to protecting your brand identity. This is what determines the scope of your trademark protection.

Understanding Classes of Goods and Services

Trademarks are protected in connection with specific goods and services. These are grouped into 45 classes under the Nice Classification, an international standard used by all Madrid System members.
You must indidate the class(es) that apply to your trademark, for example: Class 25 covers clothing; Class 9 includes tech products like software and electronics; and Class 35 relates to advertising and business services.
Your international trademark application must reflect the same goods and services as your national or regional trademark registration. You can modify and trim down the list but you cannot add new classes. To expand the classes, you would first need to submit a new national or regional trademark application in your home country to cover those extra classes.

Classifying Goods and Services

Our Goods & Services Manager helps you create a list of the goods and services that you will include in your international trademark application.
The tool uses terms classified according to the Nice Classification, as well as terms accepted by WIPO and many IP Offices, helping to reduce problems and errors.
