The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, and the President of the Inter-American Association of Industrial Property (ASIPI), Mr. Alberto Berton Moreno, agreed on Thursday on the importance of intellectual property as a tool for economic, social and cultural development. The talks between Dr. Idris and the ASIPI delegation, in Geneva, covered issues of mutual concern including possible collaboration between the two organizations to promote use and further development of intellectual property in the Americas, the WIPO Patent Agenda, and the Madrid Protocol for the international registration of trademarks.

Namibia became the 123rd Contracting State of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) when it deposited its instrument of accession at WIPO on October 1, 2003. The Treaty will enter into force for Namibia on January 1, 2004.

The Assemblies of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) concluded on Wednesday following a review of activities over the past year and agreement on the agenda of the Organization for the next year. Member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) decided today to push forward with work relating to the intellectual property aspects of traditional knowledge, folklore and genetic resources. The General Assembly, meeting from September 22 to October 1, 2003, decided on an extended mandate for the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC). The mandate requires the IGC to accelerate its work, and to focus in particular on the international dimension of intellectual property (IP) and genetic resources, traditional knowledge (TK) and folklore.
