is the second patent pool administrator to provide verified SEP data for inclusion in PATENTSCOPE, following the launch of Sisvel’s data earlier this year.
With the addition of new data from Via, the world’s largest patent pool administrator, PATENTSCOPE now includes over 9,000 patent applications searchable as pool-verified SEPs.
The roughly 5,400 new pool-verified distinct applications provided by Via include three major licensing programs:
-
Advanced Audio Coding (AAC)
-
Video (AVC/H.264)
-
Qi Wireless Power
The PATENTSCOPE team is hosting two free online presentations in September to help users learn how to find and use the database’s verified SEP search feature.
SEPs in PATENTSCOPE: declared and verified data
Since 2025, PATENTSCOPE has allowed users to search “declared SEPs” – patents declared as essential to standards adopted by selected standards developing organizations (SDOs). These declarations are made by the patent holder and do not involve an independent assessment of essentiality.
The addition of pool-verified SEP information this year allows users to search patents whose essentiality is checked through assessment processes by private experts, as adopted by the patent pool administrator. This type of data provides users with an additional layer of confidence when navigating SEP information.
PATENTSCOPE currently includes over 206,000 distinct patents or applications that are declared as essential by three different SDOs, representing around 700,000 patent-to-standard relationships across more than 40 jurisdictions.
From the data provided by WIPO’s current patent pool administrator partners, more than 9,000 distinct patent applications have been identified across eleven licensing programs.
By bringing both declared and pool-verified SEP information together in PATENTSCOPE, and clearly differentiating between them, WIPO helps users better assess the relevance and reliability of SEP data when searching for patents linked to technical standards.

Upcoming PATENTSCOPE presentations
WIPO’s PATENTSCOPE team is hosting complementary demonstration sessions to show users how to find and use the ”verified" SEP search feature, including the new data collection.
